Larry Levan Street Party
Live with François K, David DePino and Joey Llanos
Larry Levan elevated DJing to an art form at New York’s Paradise Garage. As one of the first DJs to perform worldwide, as well as to develop his own record label, he was a true pioneer in the dance music industry. His extended musical journeys resulted in a strong following in both gay and straight communities alike, while his overwhelming message of love and acceptance in his music helped break down social barriers, and forced us to ask questions of our own fears and prejudices. Levan’s remix and production work, for such revered artists as Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin, Grace Jones,Chaka Khan, Smokey Robinson, Nile Rodgers, Skyy, Instant Funk, and Loleatta Holloway, continues to be treasured today by DJs all over the world. As part of the local initiative to rename King Street as Larry Levan Way, over 5,000 signatures were collected, and music lovers paid tribute to Levan’s legacy in the only way appropriate: with the Larry Levan Street Party. King Street between Varick and Hudson became Larry Levan Way for one historic day, with over 20,000 dancers bringing the original vibe of the Paradise Garage back, along with Francois K, David DePino, Joey Llanos andJocelyn Brown.
